In the Southeastern of United States, hammock is a term referring for hardwood trees that grows on contrasting ecosystem. Therefore, the form of this hammock resemble and ecological island. It sometimes grows on areas with high elevation. Florida is a place where hammock can be easily found. It is commonly surrounded by wetlands. Plenty species of hardwood trees are able to grow in such ecosystem. Besides surrounding by wetlands, coniferous forest is also common ecosystem where hammock can be found. It is classified depend on the soil it grows. Hammock that grows on wet soil is called hydric. Meanwhile, it is called as mesic when it grows on moist soil. For dry soil, the hammock is categorized as xeric.
